How important are JCU and UNSW’s separate written applications?

They’re very important. (So if you’re not even sure what the JCU and UNSW ‘written applications’ are, make sure to refer to this article and read through the information there.)

For 2022 entry into Medicine at James Cook University (JCU), your written application is used as the sole basis for interview offers. It’s also used again in combination with your interview results and school grades to make final course offers.

For 2022 entry into Dental Surgery at JCU, it’s used in combination with your school grades to make final course offers. (This course doesn’t have an interview assessment, so the university will select candidates purely on the basis of their ATAR and written assessment.)

As for UNSW, it won’t be directly used to select candidates for interview or course offers for 2022 entry, so it’s slightly less critical. However, the main purpose of UNSW’s written application is to help the interviewers shape the questions they’ll ask during the interview (which is weighted very heavily at UNSW). This means that depending on what you write in your application, this can actually influence what questions you’ll be asked on interview day—which, as you can imagine, could potentially give you a massive advantage or disadvantage!
